Mad River Distillers is a craft distiller of whiskey, rum and brandy in Warren, Vermont. The flagship tasting room is located at 137 St. Paul Street in Burlington, on the corner of St. Paul and Main. The distillery began production in 2013, and all of their spirits are mashed, fermented, distilled and bottled in Vermont. With the opening of the Burlington tasting room in 2016, Mad River Distillers introduced the Queen City to serious cocktail ware, from bar tools to bitters, including unique and hard to find syrups, mixers and shrubs. The cocktail menu consists of classic drinks and new creations, with over 30 drink choices.
At the distillery in the heart of the Mad River Valley, grains, sugar and apples are transformed into pure distillates that are barrel aged for nine months to two years. Several whiskies are produced, including Bourbon, Revolution Rye and Vermont’s first single malt whiskey, Hopscotch. The rums are distilled from a base of demerara sugar, which produces a clean distillate and a whiskey-like finish after barrel aging. Mad River distills one un-aged product – Vanilla Rum, which is perfect for cocktails. The aged rums include First Run Rum, and two special cask finished treatments of First Run Rum – Maple Cask and PX Rums. Maple Cask is finished in a barrel that held Vermont maple syrup, and PX is finished in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask. Lastly, an apple brandy distilled from 100% Vermont apples rounds out the portfolio. Made in the European style, it is aromatic and dry, but it needs a new name! In 2017, the French spirits association objected to the use of the Spanish word Malvados as the name of apple brandy, arguing that it was too close to the protected French classification of Calvados.
