Director, Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC
1. Tell us a little about your current position.
I am currently a Director at Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC in Burlington. I have been with DRM ever since moving to Vermont back in 2003. My broad areas of practice are litigation and data security/privacy. Within the litigation framework I focus primarily on commercial litigation and intellectual property. In the area of data security, I advise clients on best practices to prevent against and prepare for data breach incidents, and I also assist clients in responding to breaches when they occur.
2. What’s new since you graduated from Leadership Champlain?
I’m not quite sure how to answer this question – especially since I graduated from Leadership Champlain more than 10 years ago! My career at DRM has continued to advance steadily and has broadened into more practice areas. My family has grown considerably, and now includes my wife, two children, two stepchildren, two cats, and a fish. I still enjoy the same hobbies I did back when I was in the Leadership Champlain program, most notably playing golf, playing electric guitar (and accumulating lots of guitar gear!), and coaching youth sports.
3. What is your favorite Leadership Champlain memory?
I really enjoyed the final presentations we did. I remember that we were able to do the presentations in any manner we wanted, so I decided that during my speaking time I would walk around the entire room. It was a nice change from being tethered to a podium!
4. How has Leadership Champlain helped you get to where you are today?
The program has allowed me to understand the community more than I otherwise would have, and it has enabled me to make professional connections in key business areas.
5. What does leadership mean to you?
I view leadership as taking responsibility, doing what you say you’re going to do, seeking to influence people rather than change them, and constantly listening and seeking to understand others.
6. Any final thoughts?
As Leadership Champlain alumni, we must be sure not to lose sight of the value the program has created for us: a tangible set of relationships. I decided to get involved in the Alumni Committee in order to “re-connect†with the program and put those relationships back into greater focus.
