SUMMARY:Pause-Midi: From the Ashes of Montreal\, 1844
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeology and History of Canada’s First Parliament\, 1844-1849\nIn 1844\, Montreal was selected to be the Province of Canada’s first official capital. Members of parliament met in the newly renovated former St. Anne’s Market\, the city’s largest civic building. \nProgressive policies enacted during that decade angered Tories\, who burned down the building in 1849\, ending Montreal’s status as the capital and consigning the building to the realm of the archaeological record. \nIn the distressed world of archaeological remains in urban environments\, the preservation of this parliament’s remains stands out as an implausible oddity. The conditions that led to it are multiple and\, in hindsight\, appear accidental and altogether improbable. \nFor our April Pause-Midi presentation\, Hendrik Van Gijseghem will examine the parliament’s remains and present highlights from more than a decade of archaeological research on the site. \nGijseghem\nHendrik Van Gijseghem attended the University of Montreal\, then earned his Ph.D. at the University of California in Santa Barbara. He has taught anthropology and archaeology in Canadian and U.S. universities Since 1995 he has practiced archaeology in diverse research programs in Québec and the Peruvian Andes. Since 2017 he has been project manager in archaeology and history at Pointe-à-Callière in Montreal. \nThe presentation will be in English. \nDate: Wednesday\, April 17\nTime: 12 noon\nPlace: Zoom

SUMMARY:COTS Walk
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1988\, the COTS Walk is one of our oldest and most important peer-to-peer fundraisers. Every year around 2\,000 walkers of all ages from businesses\, schools\, religious organizations\, and neighborhoods come together from all over the region to participate. The Walk begins and ends in Battery Park with music from Jenni & the Jazz Junketeers\, Red Hot Juba\, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream\, and fun activities. \nThis family-friendly event guides Walkers along a 3.6-mile route through downtown Burlington visiting some of the shelters and facilities that COTS operates. At this event\, COTS seeks to illustrate the path a person experiencing homelessness might take when utilizing COTS services to educate our community about homelessness in our region. Bring your friends\, family\, coworkers\, dogs\, and strollers…All are welcome! \nNew on the route this year… We are super excited to share that the construction will be done on our new housing\, which is co-located with Main Street Family Shelter. This year\, you will be able to walk by Main Street Family Housing\, a multi-family apartment building that will provide 16 units of permanent\, deeply affordable housing for families experiencing homelessness. \n2024 music: Sambatucada\, Jenni Johnson & the Jazz Junketeers\, Dixie Six\, Joe Cribari\, Red Hot Juba\, Mikahely… and more coming soon!
